Job Description:

Position Overview: The American Bankers Association (ABA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Vice President (SVP) of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to lead our efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the banking industry.

The ideal candidate will drive the internal and external development and implementation of DEI policies and develop and lead external communications strategies to enhance the ABA's reputation as a leader in DEI initiatives. This position reports to the Chief Member Engagement Officer and the Executive Office.

Key Duties:

  • DEI Policy Development: Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive DEI policies and programs tailored to the banking industry.

  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) Management: Oversee the coordination, creation, and support of ERGs within the member bank network, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

  • External Communications: Develop and execute strategic external communications plans to promote the ABA's DEI initiatives and achievements to external stakeholders, including media, Congress, Government leaders, State Banking Associations, member banks of all sizes, industry partners, and the public. Collaborate with Community Outreach, ABA Foundation, and Grassroots/Advocacy to enhance ABA’s presence & support in existing programs and work together to surface new ventures and partnerships that move the DEI objectives for the Association forward.

  • Partnership Building: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for advancing DEI goals and building strategic alliances within the banking industry. Continue to develop relationships with local schools and universities.

  • Metrics and Reporting: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of DEI initiatives and provide regular reports to senior leadership and external stakeholders.

  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver training programs and resources to educate ABA members on DEI best practices, talent development, unconscious bias, and inclusive leadership. Coordinate the creation of ABA educational certificate program in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

  • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with relevant policy, and regulations, and mitigate risks associated with DEI-related issues within the banking industry.

  • Thought Leadership: Stay informed about industry trends and best practices in DEI, contributing to thought leadership initiatives through speaking engagements, publications, and networking events.

  • Other duties as assigned by business needs.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field. Relevant experience may also be considered. Master's degree preferred.

• Minimum of 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion roles, preferably within the trade association or financial services industry.

• In-depth knowledge of DEI principles, policies, and best practices, with a focus on the unique challenges and opportunities within the banking sector.

• Proven experience in developing and managing externally facing ERG groups.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

• Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a track record of developing and implementing complex DEI initiatives that drive demonstrable impact.

• Demonstrated experience in external communications, including media relations, social media management, and content development; experience with public speaking.

• Ability to analyze data and metrics to drive decision-making and measure the impact of DEI initiatives.

• Commitment to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the ABA and the banking industry.

• Ability to work successfully with both internal and external teams, stakeholders, and members.

• Experience managing a diverse team including senior-level staff.

• Ability to travel (<20%).
