Position Summary

Provides on-site support for the reprocessing of surgical instruments and trays to contracted and ORC facilities in compliance with the Department of Health, TJC, DNV, OSHA, CDC, AAMI and AORN standards and the facilities’ goals and policies.

Uses developed skills and practical knowledge to perform scheduled and unscheduled tasks independently.

This position would be set for Tuesday through Saturday on our first shift.

Duties

  • Supports daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies and instrumentation including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes aligned with IP professional standards and regulations.

  • Operates all mechanical machinery within the department such as, but not limited to, cart washers, instrument washers, steam sterilizers, low temp sterilizers, ultrasonic and drying cabinets within sterile processing.

  • Works independently and proficiently in all areas of sterile processing including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes aligned with IP professional standards and regulations.

  • Reports broken and/or missing instrumentation and can anticipate replacement needs.

  • Uses established policies and procedures to complete work assignments.

  • Uses the implemented Track & Trace system established within the sterile processing department for all tasks and products processed.

  • Able to perform assembly on advanced instrument and vendor trays aligned with IP quality and production standards.

  • Supports department needs and work assignments including, but not limited to, Navigator assignment.

  • Assists in training of, or serves as a trainer, for new employees with leadership direction.

  • Refers all decisions beyond personal scope of responsibilities to their Manager and or STERIS leadership if necessary.

  • Participates in in-services and educational offerings provided by STERIS in the facility.

  • Responds and supports requests made by STERIS leadership with ensuring requested instrumentation is prioritized and available for Customer needs.

Education Degree

High School Diploma or GED

Required Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a Sterile Processing/Surgical Technologist program preferred.

  • 2+ years of SPD experience with demonstrated proficiency in all SPD Technician responsibilities, including a solid proficiency and ability to work independently with all tray sets.

  • CRCST/ CSPDT, CST or CER/CFER, CST certification is required. Must also obtain CIS/CSIS, CHL/CSPM or STERIS Assessment certification within 12 months of hire.

  • Must maintain certification by completing 12 Continuing Education Credit Hours annually

  • Able to perform all job requirements of both a Technician I and Technician II.

  • Must demonstrate “mentor” status in applicable specialty area(s) via competency assessment within 6 months of hire

  • Leadership discretion based on satisfactory performance, validation of skill level. Productivity, quality and attendance must meet company standards, including performance rating of successful or above in all areas.

Skills

  • Awareness of LEAN concepts and ability to translate this in the work environment preferred.

  • Communicates in a professional manner to all hospital staff, Customers and company employees via all forms of communication.

  • Understands complex technical jargon within department.

  • Detailed understanding of instruments and department equipment including special/complex set components.

  • Able to troubleshoot missing instrument replacements and anticipate tray needs for special cases/unplanned cases.

  • Exercises ability to complete complex tasks based on applied knowledge under limited supervision.

  • Basic computer skills and aptitude.

  • Medical instrument knowledge.

  • Ability to work daily in a fast-paced, high pressure Healthcare Service environment.

  • Must be a team player and demonstrate flexibility to work in all areas of the department to meet production demands.

  • Acts as a resource for Technician I and II.
