Johns Hopkins University Community Outreach Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

School of Medicine - Bayview Pediatric Unit, Centro SOL is seeking a Bi-Lingual Community Outreach Specialist (COS) who will support a multidisciplinary team within the Center for Health and Opportunities for Latinos (Centro SOL) to address prevention and treatment of depression for Latino immigrants in Baltimore. This position will be instrumental in supporting participant recruitment, qualitative data collection, community engagement, data interpretation and dissemination, and insight into local context. Candidate will interact directly with Spanish speaking participants and facilitate regular conversations following an evidence-based curriculum that include 10 sessions. Ideal candidates are detail oriented and enjoy building strong relationships. This is a full-time position reporting to the Program Director.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Outreach & Monitor & Schedule Appointments

  • COS main role is to facilitate a curriculum for Latinos to complete in up to 6 months, that include intake, baseline, 10 in-person or virtual telehealth appointments, and follow ups assessments. COS will work with multiple participants in the study.

  • Schedule and monitor appointments with participants.

  • Ensure individuals attend the appointment and follow up with patients who miss or cancel appointments.

Assist Case Management Support

  • Administer a study instrument for intake, sessions and follow up assessments.

  • Document outcomes of each session.

  • Refer participants to resources and services to address their needs.

  • Deliver materials to participants when needed.

  • Communicate regularly with the study team, particularly with the clinical supervisor.

  • Report status of participants.

  • Completion of other tasks as assigned.

Additio nal Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Fluency in Spanish required (written and verbal) for direct communication with patient. Must be able to communicate in English and Spanish.

  • Familiarity with community resources that meet the social needs of Baltimore’s vulnerable population desirable.

  • Strong attention to detail, communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to take initiative.

  • Ability to engage and work closely with a wide range of individuals, including clinical providers, staff, and patients and families.

  • Work requires excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to get things done as scheduling can be challenging.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.

  • Must be compassionate and sensitive to diverse situations, results-oriented, a self-starter and capable of making appropriate decisions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team.

  • Must be able to enter data on a computer.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Candidates must successfully pass the required JHM approved designated language assessment prior to job offer.

  • New employees must complete all required training within 30 days of hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a seated position in office setting.

  • Standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.

  • Lifting and/or assisting patients during evaluations within crowded clinical environment.

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.

  • Two years related experience.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving immigrant/Latino communities.

  • Previous lived experience in the local community.

  • Some volunteer experience conducting outreach and supporting underserved individuals.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 _ Max $26.00 HRLY ($40,500 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
