To support our growth, we are now hiring a Senior Energy Modeling Consultant to work on our Flexible Load Management (FLM) Team. You will contribute to the development of innovative, accurate, timely, and high-quality products and services, typically working on multiple projects with all levels of staff. The FLM team is a leader in utility (Distributed Energy Resource) DER Planning, Program Design , and Program Implementation Analytics . Our thorough understanding of our clients’ needs and our ability to connect the practical on the ground experience enables us to help clients make big things possible.

What you will be doing:

  • Utilize residential and commercial Building Energy Modeling (BEM) to help clients answer pressing questions about flexible load management, such as what the hourly load and carbon impacts are of DER technologies not yet widely deployed in their territory.

  • Conduct novel energy efficiency and decarbonization analyses based on large scale BEM analysis frameworks, often leveraging existing work such as NREL’s ResStock and ComStock and building upon it.

  • Lead the creation of new archetype commercial BEMs to help clients investigate research questions about buildings such as fire stations, houses of worship, etc.

  • Assist with Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Potential studies, DER Program Planning, preparation of DER fillings and other regulatory support for U.S. Utilities and/or Government agencies.

  • Develop advanced analytical frameworks for large scale optimization and sensitivity analysis based on tools such as Python and R

  • Manage and analyze large datasets using Python, R or advanced Excel functions depending on the requirements of the project.

  • Prepare and present persuasive presentations.

  • Be the lead author on reports and other client deliverables, conference papers, journal articles, white papers, and marketing pieces.

  • Lead project teams of junior staff and work with the client and internal team members to complete complex tasks and deliver projects on time and on budget.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Architectural or Electrical Engineering, Building Science, Energy Management , or related subjects.

  • 8+ years Building Energy Modeling experience or related energy industry experience or academic equivalent.

  • Experienced with Building Energy Modeling Tools (e.g., OpenStudio, EnergyPlus)

  • Experience utilizing BEM tools to model commercial HVAC systems in large buildings.

  • Knowledgeable of heat transfer and thermodynamics within the context of buildings

  • Advanced experience managing and analyzing large datasets using Python, R or advanced Excel functions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Architectural or Electrical Engineering, Building Science, Energy Management , or related subjects.

  • 8+ years Building Energy Modeling experience or related energy industry experience or academic equivalent.

  • Experience and knowledge of renewables, and energy storage systems.

  • Experience with Energy Saving Calculation using Technical Resource Manuals (TRM) and other engineering guidelines such as ASHRAE fundamentals.

  • Advanced programming and data analytics skills utilizing Excel, Python and/or R.

  • Knowledge of building construction methods, mechanical systems, and related energy use in residential and commercial construction

  • Knowledge of economic valuation such as NPV and IRR analysis, and utility cost-effectiveness tests

  • Understanding of energy codes and standards for residential and commercial buildings, such as IECC codes and ASHRAE standards

  • Project Management Experience and Client Development

  • Experience leading teams and mentoring associates.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to tailor material to the audience, whether technical or non-technical

  • Ability to take ownership and uphold the highest ethical standards while delivering work on time and on budget.

  • Experience leading project teams of junior staff and consultant work with clients

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:

$116,605.00 - $198,228.00
